Most cars in the 21st century have replaced the more conventional throttle cable for an ECM (Electronic Control Module) that translates how hard the pedal is pushed into electronic signals in order to provide power to the wheels.

The ETC (Electronic Throttle Control), which is also known as Drive-By-Wire, has the unfortunate downside of delayed response and subdued acceleration, which can create problems in certain situations such as up-hill starts, quick gear changes and overtaking other cars.

Sprint Booster improves acceleration by continuously measuring and converting the digital signal provided by the ETC’s potentiometer, and providing the ECM with a new and altered signal.

The design of the Sprint Booster allows for its easy installation in all models, without the need to cut any wires (plug n’ play) or intervene in the automobile’s electronics (it does not affect other systems such as electronic injection, ABS, etc.).

Sprint Booster connects on the accelerator pedal connector. All you need to do is disconnect the OEM connector from the accelerator pedal and connect Sprint Booster in between (one side connects to the pedal and one side on the OEM connector).

Note:

It is normal for the light to stay on after you turn off the ignition. This is caused by the residual power in the circuits when the car is shut down. The reason it stays on so long is the LED is an extremely low power device, and it takes time for this power to bleed off. There is no cause for alarm as this is an extremely low power dissipation and the light does go off.

More of a hindrance than a help.

I read a lot of good things about the sprint booster and decided to give it a try. I've had it on two minis, and I still own it but I can't remember the last time I used it. If the installation wasn't so awkward I probably would have taken it out by now. All this does is make your throttle open more with less input from the pedal. The butterfly valve (or whatever high tech wizardry is involved in making the car accelerate) is fully open at something like 1/2 - 3/4 of the throttle pedal travel. I'm pretty sensitive to what's going on with the car and I can't tell a difference between the sprint booster, and just pushing harder on the the throttle pedal. If that's all there was, it might be ok, but I tried using the sprint booster at a couple of track days and auto cross events and it was terrible. When you're trying to get on the throttle in a corner at the track, you have to do it smoothly to be fast. If you get on the gas too fast or too hard, you'll lose grip in the front wheels and the car will understeer coming out of the corner. By decreasing the ratio of pedal travel to throttle modulation the sprint booster makes it harder to get on the gas smoothly. The only upside I found was down shifts were marginally easier because when you blip the throttle to raise the revs, it does take less movement to get the revs up, but this isn't nearly enough to cancel out all the time lost trying to get out of the corner.

Not what I expected

I bit. The booster is easy to install. Mine shuts down at odd times. You'll be driving and it feels as though the car just shifted gears and when you look at the control, the light is out. I tried 2 different chat people at Mini Mania, both advised me to try the manufacturer. It was money poorly spent!

Sprint booster

Pros: Makes a huge difference with the lag, works fantastic especially with the A/C on, love it!!

Cons: The price is a little steep but worth every penny to get rid of that horrible lag

Other Thoughts: Combined with my $3,000 of upgrades, this mini really moves, now I can destroy mustangs easier without having to worry about lag when I accelerate, great tool a must have in my opinion!

Other Thoughts: I was a skeptic too but decided to give it a try. I felt my MINI lagged off the start also. After I upgraded my supercharger pulley, the acceleration lag was more frustrating. This device truly does add more life to the car. And it's easy to verify the difference - just set the switch back to 'factory' mode! You can feel the performance draining away. One thing that took some getting used to is the difference in accelerator behavior when letting off the pedal. The engine continues to rev a split-second longer than before, so you need to let off the gas slightly earlier when shifting. I got used to this in a day or so.

Pros: throttle response time is litterally instant. No lag time between when you hit the gas pedal and acceleration.

Cons: may take a few days getting used to the huge difference in acceleration

Other Thoughts: easy to install, instant results, improves throttle response and acceleration.

Pros: Easy installation (3-5 min). Works great! Absolutely no lag time with acceleration. Without a doubt, the easiest way to increase the performance of your Mini.

Cons: a bit expensive.

Other Thoughts: I Would buy again, and recommend to other MINI owners. Took ALL the lag normally found in the R53 even with the A/C on. I keep a note book diary for everything I do with the car including gas mileage and it I have documented an increase of 3 MPG since installing this device. I dont get it either, but it works awesome. Next best thing since getting the smaller pulley.
