Completing this change successfully, easily and neatly is pretty straight forward on a Mini. The alternator contains the regulator and cut out functions within it’s casing, so makes the regulator box used with a dynamo redundant. However, it is useful to retain the box itself and it’s connectors.

Common Ribcase transmission problems

The "Ribcase" acronym for the gearbox as found as stock in most later '60's and '70's. The original design parameters were conceived around a small displacement low torque and horsepower engine and the "Smooth-case" transmission. The demands on this gearbox were well within design limits. Over the years the engines got bigger and bigger as did the weight of the cars they were installed in.

When most folk talk about limited slip differentials for cars with a BMC rear end, the minds immediately turn to the "Salisbury". Indeed many think that word covers any LSD for a BMC. This of course is not so. The Salisbury diff was designed in the 50's at a time when race cars were not sophisticated, tires were usually crossply with limited grip due to port compounds, and tracks were more than a little bumpy. Agriculturally built cars needed diffs built along similar lines. High static loads were more than common to help compensate for shortfalls in chassis and tire design -

Five Speed Conversion for Spridget

Perform the shop work required to do this installation using good shop safety and workmanship practices. Reference to a quality Sprite/Midget service manual will be required. PURCHASE MATERIALS Purchase a five speed transmission from a 1979- 1982 Datsun 210. These can be confirmed as correct by both the input and the output shafts being 13/16", 18 spline. With the transmission get: gearshift lever, throw out bearing carrier and fork; and for exchange purposes get the output yoke (driveshaft front yoke).

If, in order to carry out remedial work, you only jack up the back end of your 1275cc Sprite or Midget and subsequently notice a puddle of oil on the floor under the engine, DON'T PANIC! The front cover of the gearbox is not oil tight around a stationary input shaft.
Crankshaft Oil Seal Adapter

Remove the flywheel, back plate, sump and the half-round cover, secured to the block by 3 bolts, above the main bearing cap (MBC). Carefully clean up the rear block face area adjacent to the MBC (Fig. 1 A); removing all traces of gasket, burrs, etc.; also the outer, horizontal edge of the flywheel mounting flange on the crank. This is where the new oil seal will seat; it will need to be checked for damage and carefully polished smooth with wire wool or fine emery.

The impeller in these aluminum bodied pumps is long lasting cast iron, not cheaper stamped steel as in many aftermarket pumps. Use of a high capacity water pump helps to reduce cavitation in the water jacket, particularly at high RPM, as well as circulating a greater volume of coolant. (this is a good thing)
