For those who also access the Mk1-forum there is a recent topic which discusses battery box color.
looks like it may very well be black.
//mk1-forum.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31781&start=10
one of the posts reference a dealer bulletin re: felt strips in the battery box as well.
I have attached the photo.

I would not put felt or any other absorbent material in the battery box. It would only encourage rust and if above the battery, might induce a short if it got damp enough. Abrasion from the battery also should not be an issue if the battery is properly secured, so no padding is needed.

Next question.
the BMC mechanical (AKD3509) and body (AKD3510) service manuals for an “S” do have any reference for a battery cover (that I could find). Non-S manuals do show a battery cover.
There seems to be a difference of opinion as to whether an original MK1 “S” requires a battery cover.
The “S” had a boot board which lessened the “safety” need for the cover.
I have seen MK1 “S” minis both with and without the battery cover.
What say you?

I don't think BMC applied any under coating to Minis. Also there's no reason for sound deadening in the battery box, so felt strips are also out. Consequently, we're left with just body colour paint.

I have seen the interior of the box painted body color and also black.
Is the black some sort of protective material similar to undercoating?
I have also see strips of underfelt on the bottom presumably to absorb sound.
what is original and what is recommended?
