Hi all.  I learned something today.  This is purely an FYI post.
I have 2 non-turbo R56's.  A 2008 w/auto trans & 2009 with manual trans.
in my 2009, for the last 4 months or so, the coolant fan would just spin/run for almost 5 minutes after that car was off and parked.  It was not long ago, less than 10K miles, I performed the Ballet Dance and R&R'd the thermostat housing with sensors... I really didn't want to deal with that again and all the hassle of purging the system of air.
Fast forward>>>  Today I replaced the upstream O2 Sensor because it has also been in error for about 4 months or so.  Yesterday the car hiccupped and hesitated really badly, so I decided that this morning I would finally put in the new O2 Sensor I had bought for it.
Finished that, cleared all the codes, read them, no issues - GREAT!
So, back to the cooling fan.  I noticed that it was not coming on by default again and not running for 5 minutes after the car was off and parked.
I appears to me that these systems are inter-twined and this running cooling fan may be some sort of outward warning that other issues critical to the operating temperature of the engine need to be dealt with.  Works normal now with the A/C on, but the outside temps are cooler now and not demanding that the fan be on until necessary.   - 2 birds, 1 stone, YAY!
Thanks for reading my post, I hope that this helps someone trying to troubleshoot a fan that runs for no necessary reason.
