Anecdote: While "racing" in Lemons in A-series motors, I started putting a T fitting in one of the radiator lines (often, I would replace the top hose with a cut section of an old bottom hose and use the heater take off) and I would then use an old schrader valve from a car rim or bicycle tube cut out and stuffed into a 1/2" hose and hose clamp it in. This would allow me to use a bicycle hand pump to pump up the system (that's first topped up with water normally) and pressurize it to check for leaks without the car being hot. It would ALSO tell me at what pressure my cap released into the overflow at. I found one time that it took a 30lb cap to hold 13lbs of pressure on a remote inline filler neck I had installed on a car I had bodged in a vw scirocco radiator (that does not have a filler cap location on it).

Thanks for the tip, charrison! I found a radiator cap with the proper spec for all of $4.50 at my local foreign auto repair place, and it fits as tightly as that shirt next to your avatar...

Make sure the cap fits your rad properly.  Early rads had deeper necks.

Car engines make CO2 and trees absorb CO2. By running your engine you're feeding a tree and helping the environment.

typically it's 13lbs but some spi caps are 15-16lbs.

Can any of the mods advise as to what pressure spec I need to replace my radiator cap on an '87 1275? Thanks in advance.
