I'm still trying to figure out why this thread is entitled " Steve Picone"?
(it is slang for - 'first time using a computer' ?)

~ 30 minutes in a Mini is more therapeutic than 3 sessions @ the shrink. ~

BINI owners don't know or don't care that BMW threatened litigation against any company with Mini in their name. This is blatant bullying and against companies that used Mini in their name for years. The original maker of Minis didn't seem to have this nasty streak. BMW even investigated the Vancouver Mini Club, for example, but didn't foresee that organization as a threat to their intellectual property. The VMC then obliged by bringing their real Minis to various BINI promotional events.

Thank you Spank for the post.
Lots of teasing on here for new MINI owners and that's discouraging to see so often - they certainly are a different machine all together but they are a lot of fun and the spirit of the car is the same.
one might wonder (and would be justified in doing so..) why did MINI invest the research/engineering/manufacturing into a timer that tells you how long the convertible top has been down - why not add some horsepower or maybe, I dunno... the missing temperature gauge?!
it's just a fun gag - certainly worth poking fun at. because that's exactly what it's there for.

I think we're on our 3rd BINI convertible and I've never noticed this feature. All of ours have been GenI cars w/ the supercharged motor. I'm going to have to go out and see if I can find it.
I actually give BINI a lot of credit for their earlier marketing. They came up with A LOT of fun stuff to help foster an ownership community rather than just selling an appliance to a customer. I'll admit to having a less-than-equal opinion of MINI owners as compared to mini owners when they came out, but it didn't take me too long to come around. My wife and I have owned a bunch of different BMW ones, including buying a first year Convertible and a first year Countryman new off the lot of the local dealership. (incidentally, I looked up and found that "BLOATED" is still available as a personalized plate in CA. I threatened my wife I was going to get it for her Countryman right when she bought it. She didn't find it as funny as I did.)
I've seen now where the newer MINI owners are the ones who are actually seeking out and buying many classic minis. This has certainly driven the entry price up for classic mini ownership, and has helped a lot of shops/mechanics cultivate a business model that allows them to feed their families while tending to these cars that their new owners aren't up for working on much themselves, whether it be a BINI or a mini. My wife helps me try and fight off my DIY tendencies by reminding me how much $ our household brings in for 1 hour of work, and that she would much rather do what she's trained to do and paid handsomely for and use that to pay someone a fraction of that hourly income to work on the car(s) so she can do what she really likes to do which is hang out with friends and drive her cars.
If you've never driven a BMW derivation of a mini, you should try it. I think, at least with the ones I've been in and the ones I've owned, they have done a really really good job of capturing some of the essence of the traits people like about mini ownership and put it in a modern package that meets current /ever-evolving regulatory and consumer demands.
So, OP, please don't take my comments as a dig at you or as negative commentary of BINI owners in general. And sorry if I drew out some self-righteous attitudes of some classic mini owners. I was simply trying to keep a jovial attitude by attempting to use some sarcasm or wit... essentially trying to use some tools I would best leave to someone who is more skilled.

Oh come on guys, that was the first thought I had when shopping for a convertible. Does it have a clock?

No wonder BINIS are so expensive and costly to repair, if they employ people thinking up such silly options. I wonder how much that idea cost to develop and put into production.
Makes me love my classic Mini even more.

It's maybe so you know how long you've been exposed to the sun so that you know when to reapply sunscreen. Probably a gov't bureaucratic nannyism requirement...

on my 2010 mini convertible: what is the purpose of the clock that tells how long the convertible top is down?
