"something wrong" could be your fuel gauge reading incorrectly. When it reads 'empty' you could have more fuel remaining than you think.

Fmix: can you post a picture of your tank as it sits in the boot?

The 5.5 gal tank is 5.5 gallons Imperial - 6.6 gallons US equivalent. If 4.5 US gallons maxes out the tank, then there's something wrong. The "big" 7.5 gallon tank is 9 gallons US, and I usually can put 8-8.5 gallons in it for fillups.

If your JPN spec Mini has fuel injection, it's unlikely it has a small tank - as far as I know all injection Minis had the big 7.5 gal tank.

Interesting because I think my 93 has the 5.5 gallon tank.  I fill up with around 4.5 US gallons and do it by site up to the bottom of the filler neck.  When I had it out for cleaning while doing the fuel filter replacement it was similar in size to a 5gal bucket.

Mine is from Japan, maybe they didn't get the larger tank?  I do remember it had a sticker on the back that said 1993.

That was me commenting on the tank on bat...lol.

Yes...all early saloons had 5.5 gallon....later ones got the 7.5(?) gallon one as on that car.  It does help range...but takes a bunch of space!

I had the right tank and installed it thinking, how cool is this? Due to cap seal issues I rarely filled the pair of tanks.
Once I made up thicker cap seals I was able to fill completely. Then I started running out of gas it was so long
between fill ups. So I added a 1 gallon lawn mower can full for those times. As for trunk space I tend to travel lite.

And the LWB external tank has stayed at 6 Imperial gallons from day 1.

Be aware the rating is for Imperial gallons which are around 1.2 US gallons so the 5.5 is some where around 6.5 USG +- The later size is 7.5 Imperial 9 USG +-
Chuck Heleker has pointed this out more than once.

Yes, early cars carried a 5.5 gallon tank and that was both left and right ones. The Mk3 has a larger tank.  My 85
1000 E has the large left and a 5.5 right. Steve (CTR)
