XrayActual: Yes, that's what I was thinking - hence my reference to an excessively aggressive cam.
(A bean can ricer exhaust would be cheaper and probably give similar audio results.)
Cj3636: A better "sound of power" (in my opinion) would be to modify the exhaust system to provide a deeper, throaty rumble like it actually has power. As ken suggested, start with removing the secondary cat.

as I'm sure you know, typically - racer cars are tuned for very specific engine range and use - they tend to lose performance at lower RPMs, and coming off the throttle a lot of that excess fuel in addition to an unrestricted exhaust usually results in some pops and even flames. highly tuned cars will do it
on the street... it just comes down to wanting sound like a racecar or look like one - we all have our fun somehow... scaring the heck out of neighborhood dogs is one way

I would suspect bad timing or a bad valve. Popping would suggest to me an excessively aggressive cam.

You can start by removing the secondary cat / resonator in the B pipe just after the flange. There are no sensors around it so it does not affect the emissions sensor in the car.
Some have also removed the muffler - since there is a turbo and a cat in the downpipe, the sound is not 'over the top' without the muffler, but that is subjective so proceed at your own risk. Of course, if you step on the gas aggressively, it will be loud.
I would wait on removing the cat in the downpipe - it will cause a check engine light.
