That was very funny as I did have to correct my post with your subtle reference to my typing.

No, I missed that!  Probably too busy fixing my lousy typing. I blame it on the keyboard!

I don't come here nearly as much as I used to. Been a member since 2005. It doesn't even seem it can be that long... This is a tremendous resource for all no matter your Mini/MINI. I miss some of the people I used to see here who helped me a lot...PMustang, HelpMyMini, and many others. It's easy to pass over the negative posters. I have no need to disparage anyone on here. Heck I don't even see much ReVin flack anymore. It's a great resource I don't see going away any time soon and can only get more valuable as the number of our cars dwindles but new enthusiasts keep signing up.

Cheers!

This MB does not need saving.  It has always been what it needs to be as far as I can tell.  Yes, there have been and are a few bad apples, but this is on the small thing called the internet with our big little cars.  I poke my head in every once in a while and see the various nuts posting as usual.

First, Welcome (no matter how long you have been here now)!  This is your board too so you certainly are welcome to add your observations and comments.

When the MINI came out the new vs old issue was not in jest.  There was a lot of animosity.  The conflicts died down quite a bit and as you observed, now it is more poking fun than anything else.  Lately I have wondered about how owners of the now almost 20 year old first MINIs feel about the current MINI.  After all, the current cars are not so 'mini' anymore.

Regardless, anytime I have joined a new message board those first posts have been a bit anxious.  You never know if you'll get flamed for asking what some consider a silly or obvious question or whether you'll be welcomed.

Good question, being the owner of an 05 "S" since new (ordered just the way we wanted it) I still have it, 47k miles, garage kept, like new even today, black roof, black body, last year for a true black MINI. What do I think of the latest version? Honestly, not much. The folks at BMW have clearly made the car too big. Unless your looking at a decked out JCW model, there doesn't seem to be much interesting going on. The "just a cooper" is too plain, and the others with too many doors, well, I think it goes without saying when it comes to those cars.

I'll stick with my "First Gen" new MINI, thank you, and I'll enjoy driving my "Classic" on weekends.

I try and take them for what they are. The newer models are definitively not mini in size but I believe some keep the characteristics. mainly I like the countryman as it looks like a scaled up mini and it comes in awd, and I was a fan of how the paceman looked as well. Maybe they aren't 100% mini anymore but some variety is good once in awhile.

My thoughts also.

The only car show I attend regularly is held about 25 minutes from where I live.  I like my Mini and enjoy driving it... up to about half an hour.

Good points. I think this forum will continue as long as Don wants it to. Since his business also supports BMW MINIs, as well as classics, he has a reason to keep it going. We have been relatively troll-free for quite a while now, and we see 'old hands' dropping by on occasion.

Your lament about Mini owners being reluctant to participate in evening cruises was answered in your comments about Miatas "It is also a hell of a lot more comfortable to ride in for anything longer than an hour."

Here in Ottawa, we have the All British Car Day in the summer. There is usually a healthy contingent of Minis that come from as far away as Montreal for a one-day event. When MINIs became popular, the local dealer started a MINI club open to Minis and MINIs. I visited one dinner meeting at which there was one other Mini owner (Hi Miguel!). I arrived after their dinner - not much else happening and several of those present were IMHO too intoxicated to drive. Not for me.

I think forums like MM will be around for a long time.  Perhaps the expertise from experienced users will fade.  Google will bring lost shade tree mechanics like myself to archives for years to come.

What I have found discouraging is the lack of a Mini community where I live.  I went to two British car shows and around here (one quite large) and I had a hard time making any connections.  I don't see myself as a social outcast... I did walk away with the impression that the mini owners were not interested in organizing an evening cruise or anything social of any sort.

I still have my Mini, but I recently bought a Miata and have found that since they are more ubiquitous there is a much more open and friendly crowd that comes with that car.  It is also a hell of a lot more comfortable to ride in for anything longer than an hour.  The Miata crowd will also organize autocross events and such all summer long.

I think the Mini crowd is taking themselves too seriously and forgot about the fun part of owning a car - rather than buff and brag events...

Sometimes I make fun of ourselves.  We own a 1987 Austin Mini from Wales (RHD of course)  and also (LHD) Canadian MINIs here (2009 & 2012)

I dearly love the lil' Classic Mini and we consider it a "true" Mini and the others are "baby beemers".

….and this is from people who OWN them.

Regardless, welcome.  They may not really be the next generation like many car models have evolved, but BMW was able to carry on the brand and even though in my mind, they are not the same, they are vaguely reminiscent of the original long lived Classic and so for that, they get my vote.

Joe Q public can often not differentiate.  Sometimes folks will tell me "Hey Mike, I saw this cool green Mini the other day", so I'll always say "Was it a classic mini or a new mini?"  Only rarely would they know.

If it hadn't been for big brother, the Mini/MINI would've died, like Doug said, nearly 20 yrs ago.

Not good

Have fun !  We're Bi-Minual and are having a blast with them.

As a newcomer to this forum I don't know if it is my place to tune in but i figured i would say my two cents, as a newbie here. I have seen some say that the new vs old MINI (or real vs not or whatever is it) is a bit overwhelming at first. Although I see it as a bit of poking fun it has always been in my mind these first few posts of mine. I tried to read through quite a few post before I had any activity, I wanted to see what this forum and its members were like, and I did see a lot of new vs old comments out there. Like I said, I personally see it as poking fun just like, as stated already, mopar vs not, ford vs chevy, etc. but it still was in the back of my mind my first post, wondering if i was going to get "hate" "busted" "joked" or "mocked" for having a new MINI. Since I do consider myself a car guy, and a MINI guy and just because I can't afford a classic mini I don"t feel like that makes me less of a newbie MINI guy.

That being said, My first post had some good feedback on it and everyone here seems fantastically nice and helpful, new or old. I think, so far, that this place has lots of information and great people who are willing to help each other out.

it just might be frightening for newcomers to post and, like already stated, these younger generation of kids don't seem to be coming towards forums as much. maybe its because they have the "I want it now" mentality or maybe they just don't understand the wealth of knowledge that can be found on forums. forums are filled with empirical data and loads of anecdotal evidence and stories, they are something to be cherished.

Who you callin' old?

Harumph ....you kids get off my lawn!

I also got frustrated with the forum and while not a big player here - seems like anytime someone needed an answer 5 other guys already did it before I could! - I thought I could contribute, but mostly I just read the tea leaves.

I'm mostly on Restoration Mini these days, but I do check in from time to time.

I think the biggest problem with getting young folks into classic Minis is how much it costs to fix them when you can't do the work your own self, and there are fewer and fewer of us out here who can/do work on them. And have you seen how much parts for these cars cost nowadays? Just check our host here..... And before you jump in and say well they should learn like we did - understand that today's kids grew up in a different world than we "old folks" did, they learned plug and play, not diagnose and repair.

I had a guy bring me a Sprite motor to build - after tear down I quoted him $3-3500 parts, labor and machine shop work. He about had a cow - he thought I could do it for less than $1500.

Plus too and also, we all think our old cars are worth a ton of money - I blame you, Bring a Trailer!

While I geuss I'm a fortunate one, my Mini is as dependable as a new car. I don't come to this forum for much of anything these days. When I did a few times, asking what appeared to be a silly qeustion, I was referred to use the search engine for the subject, as most of the topics that concerned me anyway, had already been discussed to the high heavens. I ask foriveness for coming to the Classic Mini Community so late in life, it's been about 15 years since my first MINI purchase, and around 13 since I was tuned into the Classics. If I have mechanical, or electrical issues that are beyond my ability to take care of, I suppose I can always get CTR to help.

I'm spolied in that respect, as I understand, not everybody has the luxury of having someone Mini experienced in there own back yard.

With that said, I do pop in from time to time, just to poke around and see if there should be a topic I'd like to get involved in. This happened to be one.

BTW, the weather was so sweet today, I took the wife, the dog, and the Mini for a smooth sailing 100+ mile run. We're all pretty tired now, so I bid you all a do.
