Yes, if an automatic transmission, check the neutral safety / park switch.

If manual, check the clutch switch at the clutch pedal hinge.

My 2005 Mini S is having sporadic starting issues. It started a few months ago, the lights would come on but the car wouldn't turn over. I thought it was the battery, couldn't find my cables and decided to try starting it one more time and it was fine. That was last spring, it made it through the summer just fine until the past month or so this problem started reoccurring and becoming more frequent.
