I would suggest you do need a Heritage Cert. The body number (and age) could place it in the S (1071) group but then, at that time, the 997s and 1071s were in batches that shared the same “letter” group. (384601 was the first Morris S). Edit: ..or maybe not ...another reference puts the first batch of Ss as between 384101 to 385096.....
The engine number belongs to an early 1275 group but somewhat later than your rego document lists.
Unfortunately Parnell won’t help as he doesn’t actually list the “batches”. ... just the first and last overall. That series of numbers contains both Ss and “ordinary ” Coopers...
What is the maximum number on the speedo - not conclusive but certainly indicative as to the model.....
Is there a brake booster?...Where is the voltage regulator mounted??
Cheers, Ian

Also keep in mind that a Mini is not a Mini Cooper which is not a Mini Cooper -S.
You can put all the necessary bits onto a plain Mini to make it act and appear like a Cooper or Cooper -S but that does not make it a Cooper or -S. That does not mean that an upgraded Mini is less of a car. They will still be fun to enjoy and drive. However, converted standard Minis just don't command the sales price of an original Cooper or -S.

Thanks Doug, looks like my sister won't be retiring just yet then!
I suspect, as I said previous he put the 1275cc engine into it at some stage, however, it is still a 1963 Mini Cooper and must be worth something?
However, we shall still dig around and see what we can find out about it's exact identity.
He purchased the car in the 70's and the last MOT was in 1984, it has sat in the garage eversince!
Thanks again,
Lyn

To be fair, it could be a 1071 Cooper-S or it could be a 1071 Cooper -S where the original 1071 was replaced with a 1275. What it cannot be is a numbers matching, 1963, 1275 Cooper -S. The 1275 was not introduced until mid-1964.
In a most inaccessible place on the back of the engine block is usually a metal tag stating the displacement of the engine. You may also want to look for that plate to confirm this is a 1275.
Bill (thewerewolf) suggested you might want a copy of Parnell's book. It is sort of the go to reference book for when changes were made to the Cooper-S. If you plan on keeping this car it will be a nice addition to your collection.

Thanks guys for the advice I will try to follow through it.
Just to confirm Doug, if I have read you correctly it cannot be an 'S' as the registration document clearly states first registration June 1963, therefore there is a possibility that he put the 1275cc engine (Which is also stated on the registration document) into the car himself (He was a mechanic)

While you are waiting on the certificate...
Look up the engine number to confirm the engine size.
Look on the wiper motor cover for the month and year date stamp.
Look at the floor mounted dim/dip switch for the headlights for its month and year date stamp.
Look at the boot lock for its month and year date stamp.
Look at the sliding window latches. They should be chrome plated metal and the tracks for the latches should have lots of holes.
If it is a 1963, it can be a standard saloon, a Cooper, or an -S. If it is a Cooper it would have been built with a 997cc engine. If it is an -S, it would have been built with a 1071cc. The 1275 was not introduced until mid-year 1964.

A production certificate from British Motor Heritage Trust will indicate whether is a Cooper or a Cooper S.

Hi all,
Wonder if anyone can help, my late brother in law has a Mini Cooper 1963 1275cc, he always told us it was a Cooper "S"
however, the registration doc just says Morris Mini Cooper Saloon the engine number is 9FDSAY---- and the frame number KA2S4/38---7
all the identification thingys on the web, I have looked at would suggest it is an "S" but my sister says it is not. Can anyone tell us how/ if we can find out?
Any info much appreciated, I have blocked out the full numbers as not sure whether it is wise to give them out publicly???
