If there is evidence of previous attempts to stop a leak, that might be the first place to look. Remove their 'patch job' and start from scratch - preferably by using the factory original seals or gaskets.

I have been trying to pinpoint an oil leak on my wife's 2007 Mini R56 N12 non S. I recently replaced the valve cover and gaskets. I can see some oil pooling right under the eccentric shaft sensor and sitting on top of the bell housing.
