I checked out the website. Good info to have once I have the funds and they have the carb in stock. Going to hold off for a little bit. Changing the radiator, fan, water pump and the main hoses kind of wiped me out. Took longer than planned since all the clamps were rusted. That bottom radiator hose is a pain in the butt to remove and reattach.

Thanks for the information!

Eventually, I will have to do some upgrades on my engine. My car loses a lot of speed going up a hill of any kind.

I failed to mention I have been building 998 engines with .060 flat top pistons, press fit con rods, 295 cyl. head with hard seats and O/S valves, Cooper two pc. damper, light flywheel and back plate. Camshaft of choice depending on driving style, MSC single carb intake with HS4, HIF38, or twin HS2s. Still bullet proof but a little happier. Of course can be had with choice of gear box style and CWP. Must supply your own diff. housing and linkage for Moke and 850 style shift. Steve (CTR)

I agree, at one time I had a standing offer to take any 998 core and pay $50. plus shipping. I must have taken in 5 or 6 before they dried up. They were all run of the mill 998s from later cars. My interest is in the 998 Cooper ones. This one has the D crown pistons and while one shows just touching the head as a result of a spun bearing. The 295 cyl head now removed is clearly from this unit due to carbon gone in one chamber. I have a 66 998 Cooper missing most everything. Cranks and rods are not a problem. The tranny (three synchro remote), cooling, starter and dizzy all there. No carbs or air cleaner box.

As I approach my 70th birthday it seems I may have 7 or 8 classic shells stored for another day. I need to do the cars or pass them along so someone else can enjoy them. It would seem to me the 997 Cooper project, 998 Cooper and Inno MK3 1000 as well as a 1071 Cooper S should show more value than 850s.  Steve (CTR)

Makes me feel good to hear all y’all say over and over that the 998 engine is “bulletproof”. Im proud to have a 998 in mine. It would be nice to have a little more power and a higher top speed for those short trips on the interstate. Only thing I would change would be the noise. Haha.

Used to buy used 998cc  ( take ur chances) for $500.00  everyday of the week, engine, tranny and most ancillaries

998cc engines are “ bullet proof”

Now, much harder to find these days

Without stripping it down it has a lot of unknowns at this point and is just a core.
As a 998 costs the same amount of money to build as a 1275 the value of this engine is more towards someone needing one for a 998 Cooper restoration.
It is probably worth more in the UK than here but assuming the crank is ok and it is a complete unit with a gearbox i think $300 to $500 would be the range to pay but only if you had a need for it as most owners would go the 1275 route.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Steve is this like asking, "How long is a piece of string?" without being able to see the string.
What all is included? engine and transmission, or?
I have seen a 998 sell for $200.00 but it was actually a 997 engine/transmission with twin H4's  this goes down to know what you have and what you are selling.
Our host has a used 998 for around $1300.00 or one built for around $5K but then you say 998 Cooper.
So you are expecting the D-pistons, a 12G295 head and what else?
What casting number are you expecting on the transmission?
I believe I have a set of the D pistons (used need rings) a couple of the 12G295 heads (bare), a Longman 295, a couple of 998 blocks, several primary gears, etc.
Now what is meant by piston has touched the head? did it damage the piston and/or the head, bend a valve or just left a mark that the piston clearance is wrong? due to the spun bearing.
How much is the lady asking for the engine?  It all goes down to supply/demand
You might also check with Dr.Mini as he may have something
