you may want to check out: //autominiregister.proboards.com/
it is a forum for auto minis. They have been great in helping me with mine, including the right oil. I use a motorcycle oil in mine and it seems to do right by the auto trans/engine.

Switching over to a manual does seem like it would be quite a chore. I probably will need to service the transmission soon though as it does have a bit of a clunky downshift feel. I generally prefer manual transmission, in fact my daily driver sedan is a 6-speed manual but will probably keep the Mini automatic.

Bill, I have done several auto to std. swap outs. It is no fun and has gotten expensive. I have three or four auto units in the corner. Don't seem I can give them away after giving credit toward the job. Steve (CTR)

I've had my auto for a little over three years now and only put about 3000km on it. A while back I started having trouble with it not knowing what gear to be in and shifting and sputtering all over the place. By random chance I met a fellow user from here at my local Lowe's and he told me to change my oil, it had only been 1000km since the oil change but I figured why not.... Low and behold, no more issue.
Long story short, definitely keep up on the oil changes and if you notice anything odd with the way it runs, maybe try an oil change to start with
Welcome and congratulations!

I heard once, from a fellow Mini guy, that you shouldn't run the 20/50. Stick to the lighter weight / multi-weight, and if you can find the specific recommended oil, use ONLY it. (sorry I don't know the specific call out.)
x2 on the cautious care and feeding of your auto. They are wonderful when working correctly, and, well not when they are not.
on your special cartridge type of oil filter, and it's assembly, be cautious with the existing oil seal and your subsequent replacement of it during your filter replacement.
Welcome to the wonderful, mad world of classic Minis. Please consider getting involved with your local Mini club. It's a little bit like a support system that we all need, from time to time.
Best regards,
MSH

Thank you for the info Dr Mini. I've seen 2 different oil weight recommendations, do prefer 20w-50 or 10w-40? I live in Florida where we get some pretty warm, muggy weather if that matter.

You have a small bore (998cc) Automatic. Get replacement filters from our host or one of the other Mini parts suppliers. Change your oil RELIGIOUSLY every 2000 miles! Mini automatic transmissions share the engine oil for lubrication. If you don't change it every 2000 miles it will tear up the transmission. Not cheap to fix either. Good luck with the new Mini!
