I rebuild the rod change shifters and just recently my stick has gone way loose. Yesterday I pulled up to select reverse and the stick came completely disconnected. Seems the rubber joint between the upper and lower parts is worn out. I liked it because it was a chrome stick. I replaced the stick and and shift pattern is tight as ever. I ream and rebush the housing then align ream the bushings. I also machine and bush the shift eye. If I have time I hone the shift eye to match the shifter ball it will end up with.

There can be free play in so many places the front and rear bushings ( some are plastic others steel backed brass ) I add a grease seal to the front to exclude water and grit. The shift eye can carry a lot of wear and the larger ball on stick can wear as well as it's socket. I add a large hose clamp to secure the cup that holds the stick in place.

Depending on the car and owner I sometimes shorten the stick 2 or 3 inches. Removing all free play and a shorter stick is my idea of a short/quick shift. Steve (CTR)

Hi, I developed a gear shift rattle. Rod change box. Recently changed the seal and aluminum ring at box. Greased the big ball, did not pull the shifter for the little ball.

What do I look for ?
