28aa bypass blow off valve, plausibility - this points to the bypass valve. I would replace or upgrade it...

Went and did some YouTube looking and there is a bunch of videos on replacing the bypass valve, so I need to check that. But it's interesting that the car will "fix" itself and the light goes out and find fine until I floor it and run it up through the gears, turbo boosting, then the light comes on and the turbo bypass opens and no boost. Sort of like the car is going into a limp home mode so it won't hurt itself.
Could be a bad bypass valve causing the loss of boost, or maybe a bad MAF sensor indicating a false 'over boost' which would trigger the bypass valve...  But I would think there should be an error code in either case...  let us know if you are able to find any error codes.

If the engine light is on, there must be an error code recorded in the computer.  Can you have someone with an OBD code reader check for error codes?

It sounds like the computer thinks your engine has an overboost condition and is shutting down the turbo for self preservation.

Can you describe the check engine light?  Was it the just the engine outline?  or was it half filled in yellow? or was it half filled in red?

Are there any modifications on your 2009 Cooper S?
