Don't know what drives it, but you should pack the oil pump on most newer cars to get a prime. I use Lubriplate #105 as it's just thick enough to stay in place, and will disolve into the oil quickly.

I replaced timing chain and reassembled. NO oil pressure at all. Dropped the pan, no suction at the pickup. I removed the pickup and had no suction at the opening (in order to rule out a clogged pickup or blocked screen).
I have ordered the new pump, but was thinking.. what turns the pump???
