Been doing some cleaning up around the shop. While I knew I had them it had been a while since I had opened the drawer. I have a NOS standing start JKD involute dog gear set. I also have a NOS Swift rolling start dog gear set. Both are now surplus to my needs. Contact info in my profile. Steve (CTR)

No such thing as a "quick shifter." One can only shift the gears in the gearbox to a certain speed without damaging the gearbox. One can shift a magic wand just as fast from one gear to the next, and safely to the gearbox, as one can shift the properly named "short shifters". (Distance = Rate x Time) To use them properly, the name "slow shifter" would be more fitting. Another issue with the short shifters is that because they are shorter the leverage it takes to shift between gears means that one has to shift harder and it is easier to shift too fast harming the gearbox.

When you shorten the throw, you shift quicker. So?

I double-clutch about half the time when upshifting and all the time when downshifting (with a throttle bip) in an effort to take it easy on my synchros. A "quickshift" mechanism is about shortening the throw, not about shifting quicker.

Why should I use a quickshift, when my braines are quicker than my gearbox.

I have raced years with Jack knight Ultra close dog boxes in 2 variants.
The old facedog system and the later involute system.
These boxes could operate faster than my braines;
Have I ever used a quickshift on these boxes? The answer is NO.

The only genuine modification my gearstick has, it is chromed.

About half the members of this and other forums claim that installing a short shifter is asking for trouble. The other half say nonsense. Mine works perfectly, but then again, my rod change box was in good shape to begin with.

Conclusion: Start with a solid, slop free box. Get a high quality short shifter and install it correctly. A short shifter in good working order is a joy to use.

Finally got around to removing the bottom plate and rotating it 180 degrees. Everything works perfect now. Thanks to everyone for your input.

I do have the reamers to bore the housing to .625 followed by pressing in .625 X .500 X .750 oil-lite bronze bushings. Then run a .500 reamer through. I have several already bushed but not ones that have had the pins removed for quick shift. I do have several housings that have been converted just not repaired. I also bore out the shift eye and rebush it leaving it a little tight. That way it can be honed to fit the shifter ball. I provide grease seal for the front to stop water and trash from entering. If you want to deal with the steady rod and the shift rod, sending just the housing, stick and shift eye I can do an exchange or turn around. Steve (CTR)

If you remove the bottom cover from the shifter housing and put it on backwards it will lock out 1st and 2nd IIRC.

Once I do what I can to remove all slop I shorten the stick 2 inches and find it comfortable. I'm noticing my tranny is wanting first and second synchros. Maybe I should have left the stick full length. Steve (CTR)

Quick shifts require very tight + well working remote shift housings to work acceptably.

I worked with a car = KAD QS came in it=  when making the car work= Shifting was horrible = had to slam the Neutral gate to get between 1-2 / 3-4 shift quads

Under inspection the remote housing was too worn to let the shifter push the rod as required.

Rod into Housing worn
Busing into front of housing SUPER Worn
Shift Eye = WORN Out.  (see pic) too much slop!

Coopertune (Steve Gibbs) in Newport news will do a Refurbish on the assembly and bring it all back into spec.
Re Bush the front of the shift housing
Flip the rod or re use depending on condition
Machine and re bush the shift eye to the shift lever.

WILL bring a QS back into well operation.  ( i can say tho = Its still too short of a shift and pretty 'picky' to shift with.

Just installed quick shift and find that it won’t rotate the rod far enough to the left to allow engaging 1st and 2nd. No problem with 3rd/4th/reverse. If I disconnect the rod I can manual turn it-and it works. Unfortunately I don’t have the orig. stk. parts to reinstall. Is there something in the installation that Iam missing? I believe the QS was from minispares.
