BC - appreciate the broker recommendation. Not perfect (charged me an additional $50 that I was happy to pay, but he should have asked me rather than just charge my credit card), but after the horror stories I've heard on shipping I was very happy.
Real nice professional driver he found. Good communication, single load/unload and worked with my schedule to make sure his drop-off time worked for me.

Pup arrived Wednesday night.

Took it for first mailbox run today (private road since I don't have it registered yet).

Pickup is on its way to Colorado. Broker found someone doing an empty run East to West Coast, so it's coming in a solo enclosed trailer.

Hope to have it Wednesday (Tuesday is actually more likely, but I'm out of town that day, so really hoping it's Wednesday. Otherwise wife will have to sign off for it  )

I understand where you are coming from but as new boats are always shrink wrapped and most cars have every panel protected with some kind of wrap it makes no sense. A regular cover will be worn out by the time a car does a 1000 plus miles trip as they just don't fit tight enough.

Whee, look in Hemming's there used to be a lot of mom and pop enclosed haulers advertising there, admittedly you are going to pay a premium for a smaller enclosed hauler though.

Well, the pickup is still in Niagara Falls New York. Iain found only one shipper so far - price was good but it was open, trying to hold out to get enclosed still.

If I have to go open, thinking I probably want at least a cover. Still worried about salt on the underside of the truck though. So hard to wash that all off.

Not Mini weather here yet in Colorado, but am still impatient to have the pickup in my garage so I can do a couple of shakedown runs on nicer days (no salt on roads here)

Hugh, to haul @ 50 ents a mile, they are probably operating a nine car hauler, simple quantity over quality

Agreed! And recommendations and personal experiences are the most important which is why I went with the shipper BC uses. As a bonus, they were close to the low bid too.

Dr Mini, I was just as impressed as you. Part of the reason the car is coming cross country. I’ve had quotes of 1000$ to 1200$ just to transport from Toronto area to PEI. Also , I notice that I forgot to mention that the quote includes the taxes too ? It pays to shop around. If you want something shipped quickly, we’ll, you’ll pay more. Cheers Doc ! ??

$1506 for 2860 miles? In Canada no less! That works out to 52 cents a mile. Somebody must like working for nothing is all I've got to say. That's NUTS!

Sorry ,but I couldn’t find an edit button. Malsal is correct , I think. Do your very best to get one single
driver the entire way for reasons Malsal points out.

Glad you are making progress Whee. I must slow down on my reading because I missed the part about
what to ask the broker/shipper.
As I’m going through this now I’ll give a few tips, but I haven’t read the whole thread, so please just
ignore if it’s already been suggested.

1: Irregardless of wether you deal with a broker or directly with a driver, make sure they carry enough
insurance to cover your car for total loss during transport. I personally got mine in writing. And if they
dont offer insurance, or not enough, you can buy more via a net search.

2: review the ratings of any broker you may use. Do the same with the driver, even though you may have
a change of driver along the way. These revues can offer a lot of information. I suggest getting this info via
the net, that way , as long as you don’t erase anything , you’ve got helpful evidence on your computer that
you can use if you have troubles.

3: try to establish a single, or at least main contact to keep things flowing smoothly, and to aid in understanding anything that might come up.

4: This really should be #1 , but make sure you know how they transport ie open transporter, closed transporter, railcar, and any combinations.

5: Make sure the seller takes as many photos of the vehicle as needed to cover the cars condition from end
to end, top to bottom. Your seller shouldn’t hesitate to send these to you in advance, so that you can
ask for specific shots if some don’t look clear, or some parts of the vehicle can’t be seen. You will be very
glad to have these if any damage occurs while the car is in transport.

6: If it is important to you , make sure you are given tracking access, so you know where your car is each day.

7: some companies will charge a small fee ( ~ 40 to 60 $ ) for a morning or afternoon drop off. This fee isnt
applied if you are content with just knowing the day that the car arrives.

8: take a camera ( with a flash ) with you when you meet to pick up your car. You may be able to have the
car delivered directly to your home, but a problem I have is that I live on a narrow, busy, one way street.
This is not a safe place to unload ( it can take a while ) so I have given my transport company a dropoff
location at a well lighted industrial park. Having visited the site this morning , I’m quite sure that the driver
will have no problems, wether it is day or night. Take a friend to help you look over the car for damages and
take pictures of any damages. Get the driver to sign showing that s/he acknowledges that damages occurred
in transit.

9: realize that as soon as the car is off of the transporter, and all documents are signed off, you have no
insurance from the transport company. Put a better way - if the car is undamaged and you drive it anywhere,
you need normal car insurance. Do without at your own peril.

10: Have a great time with the new to you car !

    Hope something here may help.
     Darren.

Thanks, and to share as well I got a bunch of quotes, between $1300 and $1800 for closed transport 1,500 miles. Most of the quotes were around $1,500.

Back to the subject of RHD minis crossing into the USA:

US CBP, (United States Custom Border Patrol) under direction of Homeland Security for some reason want to stop and turn back RHD cars- They have this RHD mentality because NHTSA (National Highway Traffic ACT) issued a directive to crack down on illegal Nissan Sky Line models RHD road rockets ,as they were involved in many , many accidents, due to Boy racers not being able to control the BIG / HP

But it appears US BP officers read it as all RHD cars: This was happening as far back as 2003 when l was turned back at Buffalo NY with 2 RHD minis on my trailerheading for MM East in Magog Que (crossing in Buffalo NY, running thru NY State and Vermont and coming back into Quebec) Canada- Saving many miles and no large city hassles But no, had to re enter Canada at Fort Erie,Ontario and drive thru Toronto and Montreal Que to get to Magog Que, Bummer, was really pissed off, just completely unnecessary as l told them was only trans versing thru the USA to get to my destination- So after that l tried to say away from RHD minis

In 2014, l had sold two RHD minis, a pick up and a Britax Cooper clone-in Florida and arranged a commercial Brokers Bond for both cars at great expense, got to the Border, fully disclosed all details of the load, handed in all the paper work, then got pulled over, cars seized trailer seized, kept me for four hours and finally sent me back to Canada but they kept the cars It took me a month to get the load back, but no way would they let me bring those minis into the USA Eventually l shipped both cars from Canada, one to The Bahamas and the other one to Australia, & of course they had to go direct from Canada to their new homes But, help arrived later, after speaking to Billy Bob, the” Mouth-from the South”, {Werewolf), he was able to obtain a letter thru one of his secret contacts in Washington DC, and a letter signed by the Chief Legal Counsel directing the US Custom officials at Buffalo NY crossing at the Peace Bridge to the proper existing legislation covering RHD cars, eg: All RHD vehicles are allowed into the USA , if in effect they can be proven to be at least 25 years old- Although it was too late for me to salvage the double load it did come in handy later, the Customs officials were more interested in how l came into possession of the letter moreso to what it said

In fact l had to use this letter last week when Whee bought my RHD mini yellow pick up and crossed into the USA at Buffalo NY, port of entry- The-young border official at US Customs was giving us a hard time, like, “hold on RHD, “ I think this car has to held for a few days for further examination , so l sheepishly pulled the ace card , “the letter, “ first he said something derogatory about the NHTSA and as he was reading the letter a senior supervisor came by, looked over his shoulder and said “that will be fine” So, we then got processed in fairly short order

I never needed to tell them my joke

“why did the siamease twins move to England ?? “

Answer: “ Because the other one wanted to drive for a change”!!

No wonder they hate me there

If anyone needs a copy of the letter, let me know

Now that's a good idea, thanks! Will do that this summer if needed.

Besides, it's looking like Oz doors are getting too expensive to actually *use*
