The Original Cooper S engines had Compression of 195 to 200. You're in good company.

Well I got some Jeep headlites from Amazon.  They have a halo that I put a couple of LED lites in.  Different.

Yesterday a took her out for a spin in the back country Oregon roads that end up at a Diary Queen in the middle of nowhere.  Not to spirited a drive just all windows open and enjoying the back country. On the way home when I got off the highway I punched it in 2nd gear, phew!! She pulled really hard right up to 6000rpm.  That's as high as I've turned her.  I was surprised how smooth and strong it was.  Jerrimey and I looked the engine over pretty well when I got the car.  It has a 1380 sticker on the back but the young fellow I bought her from lied about several things. I did a compression check and all four came out 195-200 so maybe.  Anyway I reset the redline to 6000.

13" Sportspack wheels are extremely hard on front wheel bearings. I'd go to 12" if I were you.

I suppose it depends if you're after form or function.

If its form,  then you need a couple of old Cibie Oscars.  They're what all the serious competitors would have had in the day .. although I think British competitors may have preferred Lucas or other local brands.... Perhaps with a couple of (yellow lensed) period fog lights....as well.

If you really would like to see at night then a couple of the latest LED spots (either round style or bars) is what you need.

If you want a quid each way then first check whether you have sealed beam headlights or otherwise...  If not sealed then you can easily swap in a couple of H4 halogen bulbs.  You can buy these in various powers...  they will be marked something like 55/60W . 55/60s will be a direct replacement for the bulbs you have.  If you do have sealed beams then you will need to buy some replacement 7" headlight units ... make sure you get units with metal reflectors/glass lenses.  High powered bulbs are fully capable of melting the plastic varieties.

If you want more then you can rewire the light circuits and install some relays.  These will make the 55/60s brighter.  The next step is the up the rating of the bulbs.  I have 80/100s (which are usually marked "not for highway use". These will require you you pay close attention to the dip switch as you do not want the blinded oncoming driver to run into you.....08.

If still feeling somewhat in the dark then a couple of period spots ... which use H3 bulbs .. should fix things.  Should you go all the way, 100W (or probably even more) bulbs are available ...but you now might want to consider your alternator output...

Brackets range from genuine ex-Works to various replicas to home built pieces of bent metal (the best IMHO because you custom make them to fit where/how you choose)

As we used to say in the old daze  "..all these courses are open to you, your friend or lawyer may speak on your behalf, everything you do say will be taken down and may be used as evidence against you... what do you wish to do...."

Cheers, Ian

You can add whatever kind of lights you want.  I added a set of Harley Daymaker style passing lights and had to buy a set of bike housings to mount them.  I got an Amazon $100 gift card and fabricated my own brackets to hold them.  You can buy the foglamp kit from our host along with brackets.  Much easier than going my route.

No need to add additional lights. Just upgrade to a set of the H4 Quadoptics https://www.minimania.com/part/S4699B/Classic-Mini-Quadoptic-Headlight-Kit-For-Left-Hand-Drive and use a nice bright white LED bulb for the pilot light. I can't remember what halogen bulbs I've got in mine, but they're the brightest white light ones I could find and I've never felt like I needed additional lights. Them suckers are BRIGHT!

I know but I'm not into the stock look, hence the front spoiler and big wheels.  To each his own!

minis were not designed for larger wheels and tires. you want to go smaller - down to ten inches.

A little update.  I added a front spoiler similar to a few I saw at Mini West last summer.  Then with Jeromey's help at Jet Motors a set of awesome 13" wheels.

Still no luck dragging and dropping pictures.

I have been building some tannys 5/6 recently. I try and work with DAM 5626 cases due to the stronger 3rd motion bearing housing. The problem I have been having is with the 3rd motion double ball bearing. The ball spacer breaks up and the balls all move to one side allowing the shaft to go off center. When the first motion bearing spacer breaks up the whole main shaft goes far enough off center to start popping teeth off gears. I have lost 4 cases due to the large ball bearings moving in the housing damaging the case. Three of the 5626 trannys failed in service shucking gear teeth . One even split the double ball bearing half in two. Steve (CTR)

PS I have a gear set being cryo and REM treated to reduce noise. Very excited to see how this works out. Doing all gears CWP, drops and tranny gears.

Thanks guy.  Jet Motors helped me get the engine running right and now she purrs like a kitten and pulls like crazy.  Over all the paint and all are in good shape.  There is a little howl I suspect is in the drive train I haven't found yet.  When I get home from Arizona I'm purchasing a 4 post lift which will make working on the cars much easier.

I've a bonnet stripe and an '850' badge on the boot, even had 'smiley' bubble stickers made for the wheels.  Smiles per mile...

Hmmm, that Corvette has a CHRYSLER rear end? That 392 was not a compact or light engine!  Most I've seen seem to be in Studebaker trucks!

Look for board member Air2Air.... Todd has built one of the best looking Classic Minis, with perfectly proportioned wheels, flares, stance, and just enough decals to win most of the shows he enters!  I'm not alone in thinking his car is about perfect if staying with 10 inch wheels.  You Sportpak model is widely viewed as the best-looking Mini by people who only have not seen too many Minis, with it's nice big wheels and wide flares... it looks the most modern with close fitting flares and low profile tires.   I posted a short clip of my own car slip sliding in our parking lot, showing my mix of Mk1 body and big, tight fitting wheels and brakes, and no flares.  And of course, we've seen some of the Honda-Minis with enormous 13 by 7 wheels spaced out to make the track much wider!

Like most things Mini, opinions range from purists who only like it "the way Sir Alec designed it",  all the way up to the Honda powered super skateboard look!  Take your pick!

Ok I've been on here for a year since I bought my Mini.  You all have helped me identify what I have and that is certainly appreciated.

Let me try to explain where I'm coming from.  I'm not one who will ever sell my car, it's mine and my grand kids.  I'm not a owner that doesn't use his cars.  I've been involved in racing for years and enjoy that aspect of automobiles. I lean towards that look and performance level.

I have two other cars in my garage.  My 1972 Porsche 911 I've owned for 20 years (237,000 miles), I have upgraded the engine twice, now has a 3.0L twin plug engine built to racing specs. Everything has been upgraded by me.  Weight reduced 250lbs and all the suspension and brakes upgraded.  I don't race it but drive it a lot and take it to track days 3-6 times a summer.  I have looked at over 1000 early Porsche's on the internet and have come up with a totally unique stripping I'll apply this spring.

Now I have a 65 Corvette roadster.  So far my research has found this is the only street car in the country that has a 392 Chrysler Hemi engine, transmission and rear end.  It's in the shop getting an upgraded rear suspension, some unique body work and a repaint to my old race car colors.

Sooo.  What I'm asking is does anyone have any pictures or history on classic Mini's that are racing oriented and out of the normal stock looks.  I'm happy with my 1380 cc engine and drive train and I will have it on the autox and maybe on a track day this year.  It would be fun to have her looking mostly stock but surprise a few like we had when I grew up, SLEEPERS !!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys
Kent
