I have used an electric wheelchair sealed battery in a Mini Estate and it worked well.

Like mini mover said. .. finding one for P/U is going to be hard.. almost all are too tall.. I use Interstate M23 in all my minis.. has 1000 CA.. but these are also too tall for pick up.. wally world sell battery that will work. but only 550 CA.. type 26 I think.

I hear ya Mty Mous. I favored my scooter over my Harley Iron because I live less than three miles from my work so the scooter worked out great. At 80mpg a tank of gas (~1 gal) would last me a couple weeks. It was great!  lus I could actually carry stuff with the scooter. The Harley didn't even have a spot for the registration.

Good info here. I hadn't seen this thread before. Glad it got brought back up. I've been toying with the idea of a more compact battery.
Shrimps, You know I was just using to slight the other end of that conversation. I had a 1988 Puch Moped in High School. Almost bought a scooter in college, but a motorcycle made itself available. Scooter doesn't work for my situation. Distance and speed of motorway make it too dangerous.

And people say threads only stick around on this forum for a year...
Although I can't answer your question, I did find this basic article about Lithium batteries. Also I would recommend BatteryStuff.com. There are probably cheaper places out there to buy batteries but they have a nice site with lots of articles and they list all the specs for their batteries & free priority shipping is nice too. I purchased a high capacity battery for my scooter from them several years ago that was a drop in fit. Sorry MtyMous, I would be caught dead (& alive) on a scooter. In fact I put four times as many miles on my 125cc scooter than my Iron. Ultimately sold my Iron & kept the scooter (until finally trading it towards my second Mini).

I had a question on the lithium battery setup you have for your mini, is it just wired in or is there some mods I'd have to do?

If your car is chronically hard to start, a good size battery may be a benefit, but nothing as big as the group 24 that I usually see in Minis. I started with a garden tractor battery years ago, and kept going smaller, first with large motorcycle batteries, then smaller ones. My last one weighed 11 pounds and worked quite well, until I let it sit for about 5 years without charging it, during my VTEC conversion build. It still worked ok on a fresh charge, but had lost it's staying power. My latest down size is a 3.7 pound Lithium-Ion unit in a carbon fiber case, (It fits in my shirt pocket), It cranks my VTEC over as many as 20-30 consecutive starts at mini events, with no sign of slowing down. Now, they just came out with a new one, that weighs only 1.5 pounds....almost can't wait for mine to wear out, so I can get one. Most Minis don't need a 40 + pound battery, It's an old Idea from the past, and I just Can't see hauling all that lead around, every where I go, for no good reason.
My advice, for the money,(about 35$), the small 20 pound garden tractor batteries are entirely adequate. Then again, if you live in Frozen Rabit Montana....................Well.....Move!

Any battery placement in a mini pick up is a challenge-
You are correct, a very tight fit- You must have a low profile battery to fit in the confined area allowed for the battery compartment-
And the # 1 concern is tying the battery in place-There are hooks in the body to keep the battery as far back as possible-If it comes forward by reason of not being secured properly, it can short out on the rear seat frame - Ask me how l know

I always get the most powerful for the size just for the days I have to crank it over and over to figure out what's wrong with it... As mentioned, take your old one in to get the size and terminal position matched, then get the highest CCA. Where to get one? Classic Minis United members have a national commercial account at Advance Auto that should save you a few bucks... If you decide to join the over 700 North American members at www.classicminis.org (it's free), then email me for the Advance account number.

I have an Optima battery in my PU. It is a D51 size. I like the idea of not having a bunch of liquid sulfuric acid about 6 inches from my butt! The Optima AGM gelled type battery is less likely to get any acid in the passenger compartment. They are a bit pricy though. The yellow top is a bit of overkill for the Mini, but I also used the battery to run an RV water pump for a camp shower during an annual 2 week camping outing. You might also note I added a 90 amp fuse to the positive terminal as an added bit of safety in addition to the cut-off switch to the left just out of view in the photo.
