1970 = MkIII w/alternator, 1969 = MkII w/generator, 1970 - MkII w/generator??? Maybe a NZ or Aussie MkII? Like Minitopia said below, if it is a generator it probably only needs the brushes unless the commutator is in terrible shape. The rear bush, brushes and front bearing are all available from (various) vendors. The brushes are available from our host. I did the rebuild on mine and it wasn't hard at all. There are also rebuilt one's available on fleabay from time to time. But first find out if it is a generator or an alternator and go from there. dan "I don't know much, but what I do know I know little of "

Are you sure that you have a generator? I would have thought that a 1970 Mini would have an alternator. If so, it would be unusual for it to be positive ground. How about some photos if you don't know the difference?

If the generator is not putting anything out more than likely it is as simple as needing new brushes. Mini Mania probably has a set and is very easy to install yourself. Legal Minis United - Stop the Illegal Imports - Just Say No!

The red light is indicating that the charging system is malfunctioning. Once it's repaired, the light will go out once the engine starts and the charging system starts generating electricity. As noted, there's a generator and a separate voltage regulator in the charging system, and both need to be checked. SE7EN

Let us know what you find out.. Could be the voltage regulator as well but I am betting on the generator if it was a new battery. Popping the clutch puts undue stress on primary gear bushings, needle bearings on the idler gear, transfer case as well as output gear, bearings and the clutch. On when? Just when the key is on and/or the engine's cranking to start, or all the time? SE7EN

Sounds like it's running off the new battery, which is cycling but shouldn't, as it's not a deep cycle battery. Check the IGN bulb in the speedo. Does it light when the key is just turned to the "ON" position? If not, it may be burnt out and not telling you the generator isn't functioning. SE7EN

Louie hooked the battery up correctly so I don't think that is the problem. Luckily the gentlemen he purchased the car from was very smart in regards to these cars and informing Louie of the reverse polarity was one of the first things he did....I'm leaning on the generator issue that was mentioned earlier as the car runs perfectly fine until the headlights are turned on...maybe that's 2 much of a drain for the battery. 2001 Mercedes E55 AMG - Daily Driver - she can't swim =( gone but not forgotten. 2005 BMW 645ci - the new Daily Driver! 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT - Show Car 1969 Mini Cooper Innocenti - Toy

I hope when you installed the new battery, you hooked it up just like the other one was (backwards as you said it) because it is probably positive ground.

Hey Louie! Welcome aboard man! I went to check this car out yesterday and it is simply gorgeous. Like I told you yesterday man, take it over to Manny where I have mine, he'll have a look at it for you and let you know right away what to do to take care of it. I'm not working today and am home most of the day so if you want to take that ride during your lunch time let me know. Shouldn't take him long to diagnose this....will prob take him longer to change his undies after he gets a good look at it and sees how pretty she is man... Hit me up! My Mayfair wouldn't get push started unless it has a fully chared battery.

Don't change anything until you get the battery tested at a garage with a load tester, a voltmeter is not good enough. I think you'll find the battery is NFG. Your symptoms are exactly what happened to me. For me it happened very fast, all was well one day and the next not.
