If I remember correctly, people that chose to stay behind were told to expect certain death. They were also told to put their social security number on their arms and legs to help identify the bodies. If this had been a sudden disaster then all possible help should be provided, but like LAMINI said some people can't be helped.

Sometimes the African in me comes out and I have sympathy for fellow Men. I am in the same sate as these poor souls, so should a tornado swing by and visit me and my family is this the response we should expect from my government? These folks are not in Zimbabwe or Timbuktu, they are a mere 5 hours drive from me so it hits very close to home.

IT'S extremely difficult to help people who don't want to be helped.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/10/02/ike.missing/index.html We can go to the moon, go to Mars, Saturn, Somalia, etc yet we can't help fellow tax paying citizens with alacrity when needed. Though I agree that some of these folks are brain dead twits that refused to heed the evacuation orders but still we should be able to do better than this.
