MINI Cooper Winter Checklist

Winters are tough on cars. Cold temperatures put huge stresses on the starting system, so if there's a weak link in your car it's almost certain to be evident on a cold morning, when the oil is thick, the motor difficult to turn over and the battery cranking amps are at their lowest. Tire pressures drop, putting stress on the sidewalls, and lights are on throughout the commute.

Here are some suggestions to keep your vehicle in top form.

1. Make sure your MINI Cooper's filters, including those for Air, Oil and Fuel are in good shape.

2. Ensure your engine oil is clean and has the MINI approved SAE 5W-30 Spec.

3. Spark plug replacement periods vary by engine, ranging from 30,000 -100,000 miles depending on engine type, so check your service documentation carefully.

4. Check your coolant levels. The Antifreeze should be changed every 4 years with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and approved MINI Antifreeze.

5. Check the battery. You can load-test your battery at any local auto parts store. A good battery is no use without battery leads, so check them at the same time.

6. Check the tread and air pressure of tires. Tire pressures go down 1 PSI for every 10 Fahrenheit, so it's important you check your pressures cold. If you don't do this your tires will be under inflated in the cold, you will waste fuel and you'll likely trip your vehicle's TPMS system.

7. Install good windshield wiper blades.

8. Check all your light bulbs so you can see and be seen on those long dark drives.

9. Check belts and hoses, and replace as necessary.

Going through all these points will help ensure that driving your MINI this winter season will be as safe and reliable as possible. With nothing to worry about, you can focus on driving safely and arriving at your destination safe and sound.

All these parts and many others are available online from Mini Mania.
