Upgrading Classic Mini Brakes

Over 5 million Minis have been made, most of them before 1985 when front disc brakes were standardized. Previously, standard Minis were fitted with drum brakes all round, adequate in light traffic but prone to fall out of adjustment, not very progressive unless recently overhauled, and not up to the quick responses needed to avoid accidents in modern high-density traffic.

More importantly, the drum brakes are not capable of safely stopping a Mini that has been fitted with a more powerful engine, if it is being driven aggressively. Fortunately, it is easy to upgrade the brakes on your Mini to modern standards.

Any old Mini braking system can be improved by moving to one from a later year - Mk1 Minis with single leading shoe brakes can be converted to twin leading shoe without sacrificing the...Read More

Twin Dual Leading Brake Shoe Kit
Most people who think drum brakes on a Mini are bad have never tried the "twin leading shoe" type as most commonly found on the Mini. The two main differences between the early standard single leading and the much improved twin leading is the use of two separate wheel cylinders and the use of 1 1/2" wide brake shoes in place of the original 1 1/4". This kit includes new backplates, wheel cylinders, brake shoes and all the pieces needed to upgrade from single to twin leading.

Brake Conversion Kit Drum to Disc 'S' 7.5"
No matter how well your Austin or Morris Mini Cooper handles, you still have to stop sometime, and if the car in front of you has ABS you'd better be able to stop your Mini Cooper right now! At one time the only way to get the highly desirable Mini Cooper S disc brakes was to acquire a used set and rebuild them. Now we have this kit to convert any year Austin or Morris Mini or Mini Cooper to S disc brakes. This disc brake conversion kit includes every nut, bolt and component needed.

Brake Conversion Kit Cooper 7" To Cooper 'S' 7.5"
Convert from small 7" discs that were used on the early Cooper to Cooper S 7.5" disc brakes, the largest used on 10" wheels. Kit includes cv joints, cv boot kits, drive flange, taper collar, large driveshaft nut, cotter pin, deluxe brake pads, rotors, calipers and wheel bearing kit with seal.  We recommend one of the Haynes manual if instructions are required.

Drum Brake To Stock 8.4" Disc Brake Conversion Kit
It is very common these days to find Minis here in the States with drum brakes. To convert to disk brakes you have numerous choices but most of them first have to be factored by the wheel size you have or want to run. Various options are available with the 7.5" size rotors (for use with 10" or larger wheels) or the 8.4" rotors (for use with 12" or larger wheels). No matter how well your Mini handles, you still have to stop sometime, and if the car in front of you has ABS you'd better be able to stop right now!

Turbo Brake Conversion Kit
Mini Metro Turbo Vented Brake conversion kit for all Morris or Austin Mini Coopers.  The brake conversion kit is for use on existing caliper type hubs as used on Cooper S, 1275GT and all Minis from 1984 on. Requires 12" or 13" wheels to fit. The disc brake calipers are new reconditioned units as the factory stopped fitting them 10 years ago. Also see kit C-AJJ4029A for the full kit including front disc brake hubs, roller wheel bearings and driveshaft cv joints when changing from early Mini drum brakes.

Servo Brake w/ Line Kit
The MKI Brake servo is almost impossible to find and when you do the price is really silly! The servo used in the MK3 Mini will fit into all models and works great! If you still have drum brakes don't ignore this information. A servo on drum brakes does wonders for stopping and if a future disc brake conversion is planned, a servo is a good first step! Contains servo 13H7939 a kit including mounting brackets and lines. If you have ever driven a car with one of these Servos installed you would never want to be without one!
