Bummer. Not that i agree with it but i could "somewhat" understand them changing the law for any new builds but revoking titles already issued !!!!! So now a Texas Dune buggy owner has a Buggy to sell on with no title ridiculous to say the least.
If i owned one i would be selling or titling it in a different State pronto.

Shulzworth...stop worrying about your Mini. Send it as is. There are some countries where they butcher Minis by swapping engines, but Japs tend to keep their cars as they left Longbridge.  Yes, they can add aftermarket knick knacks but it's still the same basic vehicle.  You're living in Japan, so you know there is a very low level of car thefts...which is why all the Cars and Motorbikes didn't have decent anti theft systems fitted. Hence the outcry when these cars and Bikes were stolen after they arrived in high risk countries.
Methinks Bill is trying to drum up some business with his scare stories.  He might have imported more cars over the years than most folk, BUT, how many has he brought in from Japan. Damn few, if any, I'd wager.
Id better get the Red Stripes ready for his standard response to anyone who disagrees with his opinions.

I am currently stationed in Japan and just bought an '84 mini, will I have any trouble bringing it back to the states then? I wanted to clean it up before bringing it back, does everything have to be ORIGINAL or just OEM?

A friend told me today.. his mini was SEIZED by CBP and is going back to england.. because  it had been converted to Disk brakes from Drum brakes. ( I have to think it was also converted to LHD from RHD) looking at the photo. All I can say..is  all classic minis and land rover.. must be BONE stock, original engine/ trannys and all OEM to import.. now in 2017.. and ANY spare  classic parts must have DOT marking..  if you ship inside the cars.. later bc

Bill, try putting your brain in gear before you rush to post.  The important word in my post was..DIRECT.
As in Yokohama, Kobe, Hiroshima, etc to American Ports.  We all know there are LOTS of JDM Minis in the USA.  How many have come DIRECT?  Maybe a few brought in by returning Military personnel?
The Japs have a totally different system of de-registering vehicles, and you have a limited time to export the vehicle concerned.  Then again, maybe you know better?

Hudaman, I wouldn't worry about your Mini from Japan. CBP have always been on the lookout for any suspicious LATER year Minis and LRs, posing as over 25 years old, so nothing changed there. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a Re-vin direct from Japan. It's possible, but highly unlikely.

Ive another car due in November, direct from Japan, and I'm not losing any sleep about the possibility of it being rejected. CBP don't have the time, or manpower, to fine comb every car to see if it's got any newer parts fitted. Hopefully they've got bigger fish to fry. Jim

And lhd minis from outside the UK will still be able to be imported?  Correct?

No, although that would have been funny. I'm just a guy who is trying to get his Mini from Japan after being charged a lot of cash to a company to import his mini. I just got internet hooked up after moving here from there and read this post and is now unsure if its really coming or not.
