disconnect your MAF and if it runs better (on default settings) that proves your MAF is bad. Common problem in all FI cars.

Clean or replace

Wondering if anyone has a clue about what could be causing this. It only happens under full throttle/very near full throttle. It only happens between 3000 and 5000 RPMs. It feels like a miss in one of the cylinders. It happens 1 - 3 times very quickly in each gear, then stops (or I upshift). I get a pop and burble from the exhaust at the same time, similar to when I downshift. No smoke, no warning lights. Though I haven't yet hooked it up to a scanner to see if there are any codes that just weren't severe enough to trip a light.

Things off the top of my head I could see it being, no particular order:

1. Dirty fuel filter that chokes under high demand
2. Spark plug that is fouled and doesn't burn correctly under high load
3. Fuel injector started to get clogged that doesn't spray the full amount it should under high load.
4. Waste gate is activating early, and dumping boost.
5. Some issue with a cylinder, maybe compression or valve issue.

One guy I read about had a very similar scenario but on an '02 Cooper. Ended up a piston head had a chip or hole or something. Had to have all the piston heads replace, and the top end rebuilt.
I agree with everything Dan said, but I also have some questions:

A. Is this a new behavior that recently started happening, or is this a new car to you that came with these symptoms?
B. How many miles on the car?
C. Any recent work done on the car?
D. Does this happen when you accelerate from 3 - 5k rpm or does this happen when you accelerate from lower rpm where it pulls strong, goes flat between 3-5k, and resumes pulling strong at 5k?

I don't know anything much about BMW MINIs, but to answer some of your questions:
1. Insufficient fuel delivery is a possibility. Filter, tank venting, restriction in fuel lines are possibilities.
2. Fouled spark plug would more likely cause sumptoms over a broader rpm range and other drivability issues. It wouldn't likely cause 2-3 misses at a specific rpm.
3. Fouled fuel injector would cause reduced performance at a broader rpm range and not 2-3 misses at a specific rpm.
4. Dumping wastegate should only release excess boost and I expect a slight flattening of performance, but not mis-fires.
5. Cylinder issues would present over a broad range of rpms.

Using a scanner to read on-board diagnostics would be the first step to take. It would save throwing parts at non-existent problems (guesses).
