Great. I'm comfortable I've found an original 1275S with original engine, and a documented 59k miles.
Great site, hopefully will become regular forum contributor...

Def an S head and engine bay layout.
Regulator where it should be etc.
I thought the wedged filter housing didn't come until MkII or III though for the washer bottle

Like Spitz says, the initial sequence (9F/Sa/H) is not compatible with that serial number... 1071s ended around the 34Ks (some had (FD engines). 997s were somewhat the same while 998s were fitted with 9FA/9FD type engines.
Parnell or Heritage aren't really much use to you... they might tell you what you *should* have.... not what is actually fitted to your car.
If the H is really a Y (which indicates the compression ratio ) this would be consistent with the extra headstud and bolt and which can indicate a S engine..... although some of the ADO 16s (think Austin America) also had the extra head bolts. Does you block have removable covers at the top rear of the block? - only fitted to small bores or Ss. Does your engine have a small rectangular boss cast into the top left front of the block? On a (1275) S engine this block is 3 or 4 mm below the top of the block. A Cooper (and - from memory - the 1071) has this block pretty much up against the head.
Cheers, Ian

get a Heritage Certificate and you'll find out the build specs and what the engine # should be. Most of the time when these engines
get rebuilt, the engine # gets removed. Either melted in a hot tank, or cut off when truing the block deck.

I think that H may be a Y......no MkII 1070's....plus the sequential # is too high

Hi. Just aquired 1969 Austin Mini Cooper 1275 S Mk 2.
It has only had one owner who insisted engine was original although had been rebuilt in 2001.
No engine plate but registration document shows 9FSAH 53657
I can only trace this number from the internet as referring to a 1071 engine, although that prefix doesn't go as high as the number on mine.
Could the "H" be a mistake and should read "Y"? The engine does appear to be a 1275 as it has the extra cylinder head bolts.
Any advice appreciated!
