Yes you are correct, I knew it was one of my favorite cams. I did some reading over the weekend and noticed my mistake. Should have hurried back to correct. Finding I no longer have total recall also. Steve (CTR)

Close, but the wrong cam -  the inlet is 997 cooper at 252° and exhaust is 731 at 268° iirc.

Belter of a cam in a small bore motor, the MD of Mini Spares thought my 998 was a 1275.

I'll tell ya, not really sure what all the numbers mean on the cam specs....Gotta learn that one still. My head is a 12G940, and I now the valves are 33mm Inlets & 29.3mm Exhaust, not sure if that is the larger intake valve. I've had the Haynes Mini manual since I got the car 5 yrs ago, found out there was a Metro one which I just ordered (it will probably help me alot more).........

Steve......My desire is not to over cam the engine at all. That's why I would like something similiar or just a little bit more for peppiness, I don't wanna make that mistake. From what I have read, duplex is not needed for a road engine & you have confirmed this, duplex reduces HP and somewhat louder.......Looks like a IWIS chain on a simplex w/tensioner is the best way to go & with a off set key to eliminate the possibility of any other mishaps by using an adjustable timing gear setup (they might be very reliable, I'm just not sure). Camshaft......Swift SW 5-7, KC 500 M, and others.....Just gotta make my mind up. Again........Thanks for all the input/advice

I started out swapping simplex for duplex as it seemed like a natural upgrade. I have also done the simplex to duplex with tensioner. For street units I like to buy new gears ( simplex ) make sure they are aligned and install with Iwis and tensioner. I like the off set keys as adjustment is a one and done for most street engines.

Cams are such a personal thing. I have installed so many Swift SW 5-7 cams and have had no complaints. I really like the KC 500 M which is a copy of a MG Metro cam. I think the best all round std. cam they offered. It sounds like you don't plan to make the common mistake of to much cam for the set up. Steve (CTR)

Steve.....Thanks so much for the input. Not knowing what I had in the car (Crank, cam pistons) it did run well. Burned oil, but it is just looking like it might of just been valve guides & seals. Cam definitely needs replacing. Someone else had inputted, if I'm not swapping cams, just use the off set keys (I like this route). As you stated, The Iwis chain will be a must have. What's gained by going duplex of simplex? You said you use new? Simplex or duplex? What Kent would you put into this makeup MD246 or ?

I have become fond of the MG Metro camshaft. It seems to work well in just about any engine. As for timing I have been replacing the simplex gears with new and using the Iwis chain. I keep a selection of off set keys to adjust the cam timing. I'm finding the new cams ground on new blanks to be very close when timed straight up. I tried one Piper cam and was not pleased when it failed after one vintage weekend. Shipped it back and was told I had done something wrong. I have used Kent cams since and never looked back. Car is apart, body work being done slowwwwllly. Engine is pulled. Got the engine torn down. Metro engine with a basic metro cam (pitted lobes on a few). Cam6232 crankshaft (might need a regrind, awaiting to hear when I drop it off) with AE 21251 pistons. Pistons look and measure good (and have cleaned up well), bores measure well but probably need a hone. I drive the car as much as I can, still like a good fuel mileage, but also want a little peppiness. Looking for suggestions on a new cam. I have looked at the Med Engineering kit.....MED ST2 CAMSHAFT KIT, do I go with the HT or the RS cam. Any knowledge out there on the Piper cams? Also looked a the Swifttune SW05-07 & the Kent cam MD246. Any others to consider.

I also like the fully adjustable duplex timing chains, but it's more screws to possibly come loose. Or do you just stick with a regular duplex gearing and get a offset timing chain keyway for the degrees I would need (less to go wrong)? Decisions, decisions.............
