An alternator is an alternator.... The only critical issue is "does it fit"... They'll all pretty much have more output than a Mini needs..depending of course on exactly how overboard you go wrt your lighting /stereo
Just make sure the chosen unit has the correct front mount to pulley dimension. The last one I bought allows you to adjust this distance.
Cheers, Ian.. That's weird; my post got bound up in the quote????

The DynaLite units are constructed in the same manner as the Gener-Nators linked above where a compact alternator is stuffed inside a Lucas-type generator housing. The DynaLites gradually built a reputation for questionable life due possible to overheating. Again, I didn't buy one so this is all hearsay. However, I was not willing to gamble on $800 then. Until there are a lot of good reviews of this concept I will pass again on buying an alternator repackaged to look like the generator.
Bikewiz, that's the larger, later Lucas alternator I was thinking of. It will be hard to beat that for ease of installation.

I use a 70amp GXE2297 available new with no core charge from a variety of UK sources for less than $100 delivered. More than enough power for aux fan, driving lights, radio (if you could actually hear it in a mini)

Others will have different preferences.
However, for a drop-in, no-mods boost it will be hard to beat a later Lucas alternator. The second easiest is probably the Ford Fiesta alternator. It will fit right in and accept the standard alternator plug but it may require a different belt length. Regardless, the belt will be available at your local parts store.
There are two caveats with the Fiesta alternator. First, I am not talking about the current Ford product. I mean an early 1980s Fiesta with the BOSCH (not MotorCraft) alternator. Second, these alternators are often sold rebuilt without a pulley. Push the seller to supply a pulley if they can.
The link below shows pictures of the Fiesta alternator on a TR6.

I have added a few extra accessories like a auxiliary fan, radio, power for charging a phone and charging a gps unit and now adding driving lights. I just am thinking about it now and trying to figure things out before I have a issue. I would like a higher output and try to keep modifying to a very limited. So looking for a direct bolt on if I can find it using stock belt.

There are several choices ranging from Delco 10/12-SI units, Bosch (Ford Fiesta), certain Motorola units, and the Saturn alternator. There are surely others. Each one can be made to work with differing amounts of tweaking. There are also higher output Lucas units available.
Before you change your alternator, ask yourself why and if your car needs more current. A Mini in stock trim can be quite adequately charged by the standard alternator. You only need more power/current when you start adding a lot of high-current draw accessories.
In my case, my car is running a Motorola clone of a Bosch alternator. I didn't change because I wanted a bigger alternator. I wanted to replace its stock generator with an alternator. I kept all the original wiring intact so a future owner can convert back to the generator if they wish.

Just wondering what people are using as a alternator replacement for a higher output alternator in place the standard Lucas alternator on the mini
