NOTE: These specs provide details of the maximum that can be done to the car from street stock specification, NOT THE MINIMUM! Introduction For some time there has been a need for a class that will echo the days when a would-be racer on a budget could go production-class racing in street drivable and licensable car. The following is a summary of the rules we propose to introduce that will do just that. The Austin-Healey Sprite and MG Midget are cars that can be found at reasonable prices, and for which parts are readily available. The various systems are not so complicated that they cannot be repaired or modified in the home shop or garage, so with the probable exception of fabrication of roll-over structures, they are the budget-racers dream! In that spirit we propose the following rules. It is expected that all competitors will comply in applying this philosophy: “If the rule book doesn’t say you can do it, you can’t!!” The Engine: 1275cc as supplied from 1966-1974 Modifications are allowed as follows: 1) Over-boring permitted to .040 using 8.8:1 compression slipper-style pistons 2) Kent 276 cam with stock lifters 3) An oil cooler of any configuration or size may be installed. 4) Aftermarket exhaust headers of any kind are permitted. Muffler and tailpipe configuration shall be to that allowed by the sanctioning body or race organizers, but must exit the car in the stock location, i.e. from the rear of the car. 5) The oil pan must be of the wet-sump variety though a baffled pan of larger capacity may be fitted. 6) Any air cleaner setup may be used. Suspension The stock suspension and its components must be retained and function as the sole suspension present. Mounting points may not be relocated or shimmed to relocate except as provided in this section. 1) Shims may be used to lower the car. 2) Stock front coil springs must be retained though they may be shortened to change ride-height. 3) The addition or substitution of front and/or rear anti-roll bars (sway bars) of any size is permitted. 4) No additional rear-axle locating devices of any kind are permitted (i.e.: panhard rods, torque arms, trailing links or similar non-stock members). The anti-sway bar may serve no other function. Wheels and Tires 1) Wheels are limited to the stock Rostyle wheel or its equivalent, having a 4.5” rim-width and 13” diameter and must be of stock offset. 2) The proposed “Spec” tire is the Firestone F570 165/70-13. This is currently being examined and a standard “spec” tire will be announced. Brakes 1) Brake lines may be substituted for approved braided stainless hoses. 2) Brake pad and shoe compound is free and unrestricted. Miscellaneous Items The standard 4.22:1 rear axle ratio must be retained. Must comply with local clubs regulations for catch tanks, etc. Safety Gear Since rules vary club to club all safety equipment should conform to the local club. A fuel cell and full competition seat belts are recommended. Safety roll bars should comply with the rules imposed by your chosen sanctioning body. It is recommended that the guidelines published in the current SCCA General Competition Rules be followed in constructing any bar or roll structure.
